The day was established by a unanimous decision of the UN (United Nation) General Assembly, calling on UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) and UNICEF (United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund) to raise awareness of the plight of millions of children living in countries affected by conflict.
