International Day for the preservation of the Ozone Layer 2022
The Preservation of the Ozone Layer Day observed on
16 September annually. This day offers an opportunity to focus global
attention and action on this vital environmental issue. On this day, people
from all over the world hold talks and seminars on the ozone layer.

Aim of World Ozone Layer Day :
World ozone layer day aim is to spread awareness among people about the
depletion of the Ozone Layer and search for possible solutions to preserve
it.
History of International Day for the preservation of the Ozone Layer :
In 1987 representatives from 24 countries met in Montreal and announced to the
world that it was time to stop destroying the ozone layer.
On December 19, 1994, the UN General Assembly proclaimed September 16 to be
the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, commemorating
the date when the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer
was signed in 1987. The day was first celebrated on September 16, 1995.
The initial timeline focused on eliminating
CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) and halons, which have the highest
ozone-depletion potential. In October 2016 in Kigali, Rwanda, the Montreal
Protocol was amended to accelerate the elimination of HCFC (hydro
chlorofluorocarbon) and HFCs (Hydrofluorocarbons) , which have
been are still in use as transitional substitutes for
CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) .
Facts on Ozone Layer :
CFC was being used in refrigerants and cooling units, fire extinguishers and
aerosols.
Exposure to higher amounts of UV radiation can cause skin cancer, eye diseases
and weaken the immune system of humans.
The “hole’ that was discovered in Antarctica was over 29 million square
kilometers – larger than Russia and Canada combined!

FAQ Related to Ozone Layer :
1. What is ozone?
Ans: Ozone is a special form of oxygen with the chemical formula O3. It
is a highly reactive gas composed of three oxygen atoms. It is both a natural
and a man-made product that occurs in the Earth's upper atmosphere.
2. What is ozone layer?
Ans: The ozone layer is the common term for the high concentration of
ozone that is found in the stratosphere around 15–30km above the earth's
surface. It covers the entire planet and protects life on earth by absorbing
harmful ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation from the sun.
3. Why we Celebrate world ozone layer Day?
Ans: world ozone layer day is celebrated to spread awareness among
people about the depletion of the Ozone Layer and search for possible
solutions to preserve it.
