Multipurpose river valley project:-


multipurpose river valley project are basically designed for the development of irrigation for agriculture and electricity through the construction of dams. Initially, dams were built only for storing rain water to prevent flooding but now it become multipurpose such as irrigation, power generation, etc.

                                             

A multipurpose river valley project includes the following aspects:- 

1. Irrigation
2. Flood control and river training
3. Inland navigation
4. Fish culture
5. Water supply for public health and sanitation 
6. Generation of Hydro-electric power
7. Drainage
8. Erosion and sediment control 

Objectives of multipurpose projects are:-

1. To generate hydropower for our industries and homes.
2. To check floods by regulating flow of water.
3. To check soil erosion.
4. To provide irrigation facilities.
5. To provide Inland navigation.


A multipurpose river valley scheme embodies the study of the following science:-

1. Hydraulics:- The science of the use of liquids moving under pressure.
2. Geology:- The study of rocks.
3. Agronomy and animal husbandry:- Agronomy is defined as the branch of agricultural science which deals with the production of both plant and animal crops, and the management of soil.
4. Hydrography and Hydrology 
5. Soil science and mechanics
6. Engineering:- Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Agricultural.
7. Sociology:- Scientific study of society.
8. Economics:- Study of the ownership, use, and exchange of scarce resources.
9. Infrastructure
10. Administrative:- The study public administration, governance, or management.
